A Brief Guide to Oktoberfest in Germany

Oktoberfest, held annually in Munich, is a 16-day folk festival running from late September to the first weekend in October. One of the world’s largest folk festivals, Oktoberfest is known for festive beer tents and gardens, traditional Bavarian food and costumes, and German brass band music.

Some of the things to see and do during Oktoberfest

– Drink beer in the large beer tents. There are over 100 of them at Oktoberfest, each with its own unique atmosphere. The most famous tents are the Hofbräuhaus, the Paulaner, and the Augustiner.

– Eat traditional Bavarian food like sausages, roast pork, and pretzels.

– Watch the two major parades held during Oktoberfest: the Opening Day Parade and the Traditional Costume and Hunters’ Parade.

– Enjoy the rides, games, exhibits, and carnival-like atmosphere.

– Learn some German phrases. It’s always a good idea to learn a few phrases of the local language when you’re traveling. Here are a few useful German phrases for Oktoberfest:
Prost! (Cheers!)
Ein Bier, bitte! (One beer, please!)
Ich bin satt. (I’m full.)
Wo ist das Klo? (Where is the bathroom?)
Oans, zwoa, drei, Gsuffa! (One, two, three, drink!)

While you’re at it, learn the short German drinking song “Ein Prosit”. That way, you won’t feel left out when the crowd sings it. Don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of chances to practice – it happens every 20 minutes or so.
